Connecting young people with rescue animals through safe, meaningful relationships.

The Need
Many young people experience increasing social disconnection, psychological distress and reduced belonging. At the same time, thousands of companion animals wait in rescue organisations for safe, loving homes.
These two challenges are usually addressed separately.
Paws & Connect believes that, when carefully supported, meaningful relationships between young people and rescued companion animals can benefit both.
Young people thrive through safe, trusting relationships and a sense of belonging, with relationships being among the strongest protective factors in human well-being.
Yet many experience increased social disconnection, psychological distress and reduced opportunities for meaningful connection during adolescence.
Paws & Connect creates safe relationships where both children and companion animals discover that they are worthy of trust, belonging and hope—and where the young person also discovers the strength that comes from being a reliable caregiver.
Research suggests that companion animals can contribute to protective factors associated with positive wellbeing, including social support, routine, belonging, physical activity and emotional connection. Equally important is the developmental value of the caregiving role itself: the everyday acts of feeding, walking, soothing and responding to an animal’s needs offer concrete opportunities to practise empathy, emotional regulation, responsibility and a growing sense of competence.
The Heart Of Paws & Connect
Our Approach
We believe that safe, caring relationships have the power to change lives.
We believe that when young people experience trust, responsibility and unconditional acceptance through relationships with companion animals and supportive adults, they can build confidence, resilience, empathy and hope for the future. We believe that trust is the foundation upon which hope, belonging and lifelong growth are built.
We believe that growth is reciprocal. Young people do not only receive care and connection; they are also given the opportunity to provide it. In becoming a trusted caregiver for a vulnerable animal—meeting needs, offering consistency and responding with sensitivity—they experience themselves as capable, valued and needed. This act of providing care is a profound source of purpose, competence and self-belief.
We also believe that rescued animals deserve lives filled with safety, love and belonging.
By supporting both, we create opportunities for growth that benefit individuals, families and communities.
Paws & Connect creates opportunities for young people and rescue animals to form safe, supportive relationships — with thoughtful matching, ongoing support and the wellbeing of both at the centre. At the heart of our approach is relationship matching — bringing together the right young person, the right animal and the right support environment.
We consider the young person’s needs, interests and readiness, the animal’s temperament and history, the family’s circumstances, and the practical realities of everyday life.
We take a careful, collaborative approach, working with families, rescue organisations and relevant professionals to create connections that are safe, realistic and mutually beneficial.
Our support continues beyond the initial match. We work alongside families and rescue partners to help relationships develop safely, respond to challenges early, and support the wellbeing of both the young person and the animal.

Why rescue animals?
Rescue animals can offer something uniquely meaningful: the opportunity to build a relationship based on patience, trust and mutual care. For some young people, connecting with an animal who is also learning to trust can create a powerful sense of purpose, belonging and connection. Paws & Connect believes these relationships can benefit both the young person and the animal.
How it works
At Paws & Connect, we believe meaningful relationships take time. Our approach is about getting to know people, understanding animals, and creating the right conditions for trust to develop.
We work alongside young people, families, and rescue organisations to support connections that are safe, thoughtful, and mutually beneficial.
1. Getting to know you
We begin by learning about the young person, their interests, their family, and what kind of connection they are hoping to build.
We also take time to understand the family’s circumstances, expectations, and readiness to welcome an animal into their home.
2. Finding the right match
Every young person and every animal is different.
Together with our rescue partners, we consider temperament, personality, practical needs, and the home environment to help identify a suitable match.
The aim is not simply to find an animal that needs a home, but to create the conditions for a relationship that can work well for everyone.
3. Creating a safe beginning
Once a suitable match has been identified, we help the family prepare for the animal’s arrival.
This includes understanding the animal’s needs, creating a safe and comfortable environment, and allowing time for the relationship to develop at its own pace.
There is no expectation that trust must happen immediately.
4. Supporting the relationship
We believe that support should continue beyond the initial introduction.
We stay connected with families and rescue organisations, offering guidance, practical support, and opportunities to reflect on how things are going.
If challenges arise, we work together to understand what is needed and help identify the best way forward.
5. Growing together
Over time, we hope that both the young person and the animal experience greater trust, connection, and a sense of belonging.
For the young person, this may include opportunities to develop confidence, responsibility, and a deeper understanding of relationships.
For the animal, it may mean experiencing a safe, loving environment and the opportunity to build a lasting bond.
We believe that when the right support is in place, both can benefit
Two ways to begin
Foster with the option to adopt
For some families, fostering may be the right place to start.
This allows time for the young person, family, and animal to get to know one another before deciding whether adoption is the right next step.
Adopt from the beginning
For other families, adoption may be the right pathway from the outset.
Thoughtful matching, preparation, and ongoing support can help the relationship get off to a positive start.]
Every relationship is different
There is no single way for a connection to grow.
Some animals may approach quickly. Others may need more time, patience, and space.
We believe that the best relationships develop through understanding, consistency, and the freedom to build trust at a pace that feels right for both the young person and the animal.
At Paws & Connect, we are not simply bringing people and animals together. We are helping create the conditions for safe, meaningful relationships to grow.

Who we work with
Paws & Connect works alongside young people and their families, animal rescue organisations, and relevant professionals. Each plays an important role in creating safe, supportive and sustainable relationships between young people and rescue animals.
Young people and families
Paws & Connect works with young people and their families to understand their needs, interests, readiness and circumstances. Families provide the safe and supportive environment in which relationships can develop, with guidance and ongoing support from Paws & Connect.
Rescue organisations
Rescue organisations bring valuable knowledge of each animal’s history, temperament, needs and circumstances. Paws & Connect works closely with rescue partners to identify suitable animals, support the matching process and help ensure that the animal’s welfare remains central throughout the relationship.
Relevant professionals
Where appropriate, Paws & Connect works alongside relevant professionals involved in a young person’s support. This collaboration helps ensure that participation is appropriate, well supported and consistent with the young person’s existing needs and circumstances.
The difference a connection can make
A safe, meaningful relationship can create benefits for both the young person and the animal, while also having positive effects beyond the relationship itself. It can contribute to confidence, belonging, responsibility and wellbeing for young people, while giving rescue animals opportunities for stability, enrichment and loving homes. Over time, these positive experiences can also strengthen families, promote understanding of animal welfare and contribute to more connected communities.

For young people
Paws & Connect provides opportunities for young people to develop connection, confidence, responsibility and a sense of belonging through meaningful relationships with animals. The experience can also create opportunities to practise patience, empathy and caregiving in a supportive environment.
For rescue animals
Rescue animals are valued as individuals and partners, not simply as a means of helping young people. They can benefit from stability, enrichment, consistent care and the opportunity to develop trust within a safe and supportive environment.
For families and communities
Families are supported to provide a safe and nurturing environment, while the experience can encourage shared responsibility, strengthen relationships and build greater understanding of animal welfare. These positive experiences may also contribute to more compassionate and connected communities.
